Fantastical Quests is an independent information portal about live action roleplay (LARP) — the hobby where participants bring characters, stories and imagined worlds to life through physical play. We built this site because the questions people bring to LARP are genuinely varied: what to wear to a first event, how rules and safety systems work, where fiction ends and real-world conduct begins. This portal tries to answer those questions clearly, in one place.
What this site covers
Live action roleplay sits at the meeting point of storytelling, craftsmanship and physical play. The subject is wider than it first looks. Readers arrive asking about kit and costuming, about how combat-safe weapons are made and judged, about the etiquette of in-character and out-of-character spaces, and about how large events are organised and run. We write about all of it.
The guides on this site range from the practical — what to bring to your first event, how to read a character sheet — to the more conceptual, such as the difference between system-heavy and freeform styles of play. We try to cover the shape of the hobby as it actually exists in the UK, without favouring one system or one community over another.
Who comes here
Some readers are entirely new to LARP and are working out whether it is for them. Others have been playing for years and want to go deeper on a specific aspect of the craft. A fair number are friends or family members trying to understand what the person they care about spends their weekends doing — and that is a perfectly good reason to be here too.
The site does not assume prior experience. Specialist terms from the hobby are explained in plain English when they first appear, and the guides are written to be readable whether you have been to a hundred events or are still deciding whether to go to your first.
How a guide is made here
We start from the questions that bring people to the subject in the first place, then check the answers against public sources — rulebooks, event documentation, community guidance — before writing. Where something is genuinely contested or varies between systems, we say so rather than flatten it into a single answer.
- Questions are drawn from what readers actually search for, not from what we find easiest to write about.
- Answers are written in plain language, with specialist vocabulary defined rather than assumed.
- Pages are updated when the underlying information changes — a rule revision, a shift in community practice.
- Where a subject is outside our scope, we say so clearly and point outward rather than guess.
No person is named as an author. The site speaks as an editorial team, and that is how we prefer it: the quality of the information matters more than the identity of whoever wrote it.
What this site does not do
Fantastical Quests is a free information resource. We do not sell goods or services, we do not offer personal advice tailored to individual circumstances, and we do not rank or endorse specific suppliers, event organisers or groups. If a piece of information on this site leads you to make a decision — about kit, a system, an event — that decision is yours.
Nothing here represents the official position of any LARP system, organisation or governing body. We are independent, and we write accordingly.
Getting in touch
The best way to reach us is by e-mail: [email protected]. We aim to reply within 48 hours. If you have spotted something out of date, a factual error, or a topic the site should cover but does not, we want to hear about it — that kind of feedback is genuinely useful and shapes what gets written next.
We cannot respond to requests for personal advice or recommendations, but questions about the subject are always welcome.
This site exists to provide general information about live action roleplay. We do not sell any goods or services. The content here is offered in good faith for informational purposes only, and readers should use their own judgement when acting on it.
